Super Bowl XLII means Super bets

The Super Bowl is little more than a week away and while money is being poured into the bookmakers daily, the majority of it is being placed on the big underdog, the New York Giants. Over 80% of the bets already taken have been for the Giants, currently at +11.5 at most books. This could also be the first Super Bowl to handle more than $100 million in bets.

The current record of $94.5 million was set during Super Bowl XL between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks, two teams from very small markets compared to the Giants (New York) and Patriots (New England = Boston).

Ironically, the New England Patriots team could come full circle, as they were double digit underdogs six years ago in Super Bowl XXXVI when they defeated the dominant St. Louis Rams in shocking fashion, and now they have the chance to win the “Big Dance” as double digit favorites (and become the greatest team of all time).

Whether you support gambling or are strictly against it, that fact remains that gambling is a major factor driving viewers to attend and watch games and it plays a role in keeping sports as popular as they are in our society today.

By the way, I already have locked in the Giants at +11.5. Good luck to all!
